As I have reflected more on the state of things, I have been reminded of a medical article I read a few years back. It was penned by Dr Leo Alexander in the post-Holocaust years (1949), titled "Medical Science Under Dictatorship" and published in the New England Journal of Medicine. He explores how the takeover of science came about, and also describes the horrific consequences that naturally result once medicine comes under political (and dictatorial) forces.
The essence of his paper is that the tragedy has "small beginnings": in the case of the war years, it was the division of the utility of life into two halves: a life worthy to be lived, and the live unworthy to be lived. Of course, the dictatorship defines the terms - and, in so doing, becomes judge, jury and executioner. I wonder if, in our day, the worthy and unworthy have been transferred to vaccinated and unvaccinated, respectively.
I feel there is a deeper connection between Alexander's piece (especially the concerns he raises in regard to the relationship of medicine to prevailing social attidues/ philosophies) and what you are writing about. I would be happy to email a PDF of the Medical Journal article to anyone interested.
