Later these were used to America as well, with Edward Bernays and Walter Lippman and others engaged in manipulation, while the government shut down opposition, through censorship of the media and imprisoning war critics like Eugene V. Debs.
Today's regime has mastered these techniques, except that they just don't work on certain people. Lippman wrote that the easiest to control and deceive were those average middle class people who stay up on the news. The rural and poor don't trust those in power, so they are harder to manipulate, and certain people can see through the lies.
They shut down society to push change, not out of fear of a mild disease. The oligarchy went to war on the world and will keep doing so.
